The colonial suspicion of cinema was grounded on the assumption that a naïve audience would not be able to distinguish cinema from reality and hence would mistake all the scandalous content they saw on screen as being emblematic of English character—a clear danger to the might and prestige of the Empire.

Similarly, even when the film Chantabbayi was planned by the makers, public opinion swung to the choice of Chiranjeevi as the most one because of his talent in comic timing – which underlies his versatility. Two of the lasting colonial legacies that film censorship in the post-colonial context inherited were is the assumption that cinema affects people differently depending on their class, gender and education (so censorship is never for us but for the abstract anonymous illiterate masses) and the self-fulfilling prophecy of the excitable Indian. It's an Indian gem from the mid 90s starring Chiranjeevi as Sitaramudu/Mr. He took a long break of almost two years to re-connect with fans, re-work on his body-language to suit his age.

There’s enough double-crossing to fill up months of TV soap operas, but Alluda Mazaaka…! is the product of the Tollywood film industry, and if all their films are this fun then I definitely need to delve a little deeper.

There is a huge mass-appeal but also an animal magnetism about his personality that endeared him to the classes if he gets the right balance in a plot.

Oh sorry, that was on the tip of your tongue and I just said it for you. He tested a multi-starrer next with the legendary ANR – Mechanic Alludu produced by Allu Aravind which bombed again. The fights are inventive and hilarious in their audacity, and while they’re not up to Hong Kong standards, they’re ridiculously fun to watch and always cranked to 11. The film makes visible the normally hidden operations of the Censor Board and allows us to see censorship’s “contribution by deletion” to the history of Indian cinema.

It is the lack of appreciation for what the fans want and what the larger audience of class and mass expect that drove many stars in the past to make huge mistakes, eventually driving them out of currency into oblivion – e.g Shoban Babu who relinquished films after many of his films started flopping in the 90s forcing him to cut short his career by atleast five years.
