Bear Canyon Lake consists of 60 acres (24 ha) with a maximum depth of 50 feet (15 m).

A scenic tour of bear canyon lake. Trail is easy but slow due to rocks, roots, and fallen trees. No permits are required to camp in Wilderness areas. On a Wednesday, we passed no one hiking and saw fishermen who were well spaced. Would be nice if it was fixed up like the other side. The west side has some large trees on the trail. I’d do it again.

Bear Canyon Lake Road Turn off NM35, 2.7 miles north of Mimbres, Hanover, NM 88041. Traveler rating. Trail is clear and obvious on west side of lake; east side has trails but they’re smaller, fainter and single-file. Boating and Fishing. On the south end there are more peaceful areas where a few were paddlebording and kayaking. Potable water, toilets, and other amenities are not generally available. It follows the west side of the lake. It lies at 7,560 feet (2,300 m).

Bear Canyon Lake is a popular fishing and hiking spot. If you don't like hikes, I recommend that you stop at Woods Canyon Lake.

Website. It’s hard on knees and ankles if you have issues. 1 Restaurant within 5 miles. Kids brought water shoes and lake was perfect for young kids to walk into and swim if they want. Hard time around the back of the lake and crossing the dam area. The Rim Lakes Area enjoys magnificent weather during the summertime. From either parking area, well marked and maintained trails lead down a steep slope, switchbacking about 1/4 mile down 150 vertical feet to the shoreline. 0 Other Attractions within 5 miles.

Despite being several miles down dirt roads and having few amenities, it draws many visitors.


Camping is considered undeveloped. The Arizona Department of Game and Fish stocks it with catchable-sized rainbow trout about six times each year. Requires off road access for a good 10 miles to get to the trail head.
