The second novel by Dickens, and considered one of his best, Oliver Twist is the story of an orphan boy who is essentially born into an English workhouse. But what he discovers in the harsh streets of London's underworld makes the workhouse look like a picnic. I have recently read Great Expectations by the same author, and he does seem to have a way with words, characters and plot.
